I do like green tea and find it a refreshing drink at any time of the day. I've also read about many health related benefits associated with drinking it, but wondered about the caffeine content.

So, I begged the question is green tea caffeine free? Well, it appears it is not and for those of us who like their beverages caffeine free we ought to choose carefully when buying green tea or taking green tea capsules.

As many of us know, caffeine can be responsible for raising our blood pressure, and for acting as a stimulant. But, the only real worry would only be if we were to consume a lot any liquid drink that had it as a constituent ingredient.

Briefly looking at the differing amounts of caffeine in other popular beverages, there's about one quarter of the amount in green tea that's in an equivalent cup of coffee.

One rather interesting snippet of information I came across mentioned that the strength of caffeine can differ according to how you brew it. It seems that the brewing time and how often you use the tea leaves has an impact on the caffeine levels.

Another is that the caffeine in green tea acts somewhat differently in that it does not raise your heart rate or blood pressure in the same way as the caffeine in coffee. It seems the reason is because of the way that potent antioxidants in green tea combine with green tea caffeine.

So much so that it's probably safe enough for anyone who thinks they have to avoid it at all costs.

For those of you who want to take caffeine out of the equation altogether the answer would be to choose those varieties of green tea, both as leaves and as an extract in capsule form, that are offered as caffeine free.
